That Pivotal Moment

That Pivotal Moment

Red bushes are burning.
Sugar maples are ablaze.
Cool air invigorates.
Ahh, rejuvenation!
Welcome back,
autumn days.

Spirits are revived.
Each step falls lighter.
An end and a beginning
merge into one,
and that pivotal moment
couldn't be brighter.

Winter's Final Picnic

Winter's Final Picnic

Winter set a picnic table
with a sparkling cloth of snow.
But one scruffy squirrel
was the only guest to show.

Squirrel brought his own lunch
packed away in his cheek.
He had a big, black walnut,
dug up by the creek.

Squirrel gnawed on that nut.
He left shreds of shells all around.
He finished his messy meal.
Then he jumped down to the ground.

Spring came along
and melted Winter's snow.
She tapped Winter on the shoulder
and motioned for him to go.

Winter grumbled a bit.
He coughed out a chilly breeze.
"Don't push me. I'm going," he bellowed.
"But I'll be back later, and I'll bring a hard freeze!"

Spring smiled and waved goodbye.
She said, "Yes, yes, I'm sure you will."
Then she taught the birds to sing again
and kissed a daffodil.

Waiting

Waiting

Spring is a fickle trickster.
She tiptoes by,
peeks in the windows,
curls her finger at us,
and tempts us outside
with bouquets of sunny daffodils.
She seduces us
with trails of purple crocuses
lifting their bobbing heads
in the warm sun.

Transfixed, we step out
with smiles wide
to follow her
and soak in her light.

Then she smirks and spins,
and in an instant,
she turns a cold shoulder to us.
She disappears and abandons us
in a whirlwind,
leaving drifts of snow behind
to drape around
the drooping blooms.

Yet, in spite of her rejection,
we wait for her return.

Hidden

Hidden

Crocus buds wait to bloom
beneath the layered snow.
Dormant seeds left behind
wait their turn to grow.

Bunnies burrow below the shrubs,
huddled against the wind.
Frogs retreat to frozen mud,
submerged 'til season's end.

Winter's blanket covers all
in frozen, muffled white.
Then spring leaps out from under it.
Surprise! Surprise! What sweet delight!
