Beckoning Beach

Beckoning Beach

Blue twilight skies
hold iridescent clouds
that hide the sinking sun.
Rolling white caps
whisper and whoosh
keeping sandpipers on the run.

The waves embrace
the cold, wet sand,
sidling closer until within reach.
A gull cries overhead
as the waves retreat
from the enticing, beckoning beach.

"Come, come, come to the beach.
Write your worries in the sand;
the water will wash them all away.
Collect some shells;
watch the hermit crabs dance."
The beach is beckoning, calling,
"Come, come, come to the sea today."

  1. The beach beckons to me all year around, but it's a precious rarity to have an opportunity to succumb to the call. That makes any visit to the beach even more wonderful.

    Happy New Year!!!

  11. I do meditation where you leave your worries as a pile of pebbles in the sand and you walk away from them and let the ocean wash them away... I found this particular poem of yours like a meditation. Do you ever feel that way about your writing?
    I also just want to say thank you - you and one other blogger have really stuck with me through my blog even though now I only post videos. Your comments are always there. I really appreciate that more than you know. You are a very special soul xxx

  12. Thanks, everyone. Sandy, this picture is of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. We went there for a family vacation between Christmas and New Years. It was a wonderful week that went by much too quickly. We didn't swim, but we walked on the beach a lot and spent some time along the edge of the waves letting our feet get wet. The water was too cold to swim, but the air temperatures were unseasonably warm, so it was a very pleasant vacation. I hated to leave and return to winter in Ohio, but all good things must end, I suppose. Jade, hugs to you. Yes, I do sometimes feel that writing is a type of meditation, especially when I get in the zone and kind of forget everything else while writing.

    Happy New Year, everyone! Thank you so much for your kind words.

  15. Come back, indeed! Alas, the beach -- and the weather in which to walk along it -- are far from Minneapolis...

  16. "Come, come, come to the beach.

    Write your worries in the sand;

    the water will wash them all away " , the ocean and her beach seem to do this for me every time. Plus, faced with such majesty that seems to go on forever, it gives me a bit of perspective. Beautiful poem...

  17. Happy New Year, Connie. Thanks for identifying the location of this beach scene and it must certainly have been quite a nice respite for you and your family even if the water was too cold to swim. Walking along a shoreline is always relaxing and we did it often when we lived in NJ years ago.

  22. There's just not a better time to visit the beach than in WINTER I think... First of all, it is not crowded... The weather is usually better than it is at home!!!!! AND--that seafood is GREAT...

    We go to the beach twice a year: May and Dec.... Love it!!! Wouldn't want to live there permanently --but going twice a year is about perfect.

    Great words, Connie.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  23. Thank you all for your comments. I'm missing being at the beach even more today. We've had snow the past couple of days, and it is brutally cold here now. I'd go back to South Carolina in an instant if I could. :)
