Point of View

Point of View

With whiskers quivering, the tiny, grey mouse
searches for seeds under the sticky milk pod.
Soon there will be no tall, green weeds.
No clover, no Queen Anne's Lace, no goldenrod.

Although the mouse is blissfully unaware,
a "SOLD" sign has been put up on the lot.
It is the last empty lot in the housing development.
Sales in the area have been running hot.

Soon the bulldozer will come
to dig a foundation for a new house.
No one will care or worry about
the tiny, grey, displaced mouse.

Oh I know, some will say, "This is progress!
A family will have a brand new house."
I'm sure that family will think it's progress,
but I bet you a dollar, no one will ask the mouse.

  1. very good poem. But as revenge, the mouse shall haunt their basement and elude traps

  2. Nicely done. I miss seeing Queen Anne's Lace down here--in my archives of my blog there are a couple of poems about the flower that line roadways and fields in other parts of the country.

  3. Poor mouse ~ but I can't feel too sorry for him; we have a constant battle with mice in the chicken houses. But you've given us a very well written poem ~ again.

Oh, a cute poem, Connie. I'd like to think that Mr. Mouse will find a new home. I just came from Laura Ingalls Wilder's blog where a friend made her a little grey mouse! lol

  6. I can so relate to this. The woods behind our house was filled with wild life and then, the bulldozers came and a housing development went in. It broke my heart to see they named it Knotty Pines, but cut all the pine trees down. You have a way with words.

  7. Oh, how cute! You're right: nobody ever asks the critters what they think of human progress. The new house will be great for the family moving in, but not too swell for the mouse and his family. (My sympathy for mice is much higher since we no longer have a family of them living in our attic. :)

    Have a super weekend.

  8. Well said. I imagine the mouse will find his way inside the new house.

  9. How sweet.........and you are right! No stops to consider the creatures that already live in the undeveloped area. This happens a lot in our area when the mesquite woods and prairie are plowed and cleared.

  10. Connie this is a sweet poem, although I feel for the mouse... I wouldn't want him living in my house either :-) ...No one will ask for or miss the mouse ♡♡

  12. this is so cute Connie. They once bulldozed an area here where the deer used to come and one day a little deer stood in the plowed over spot looking completely confused. Great poem as always.

  13. Aww poor mouse! I'm always a little sad when land gets dug up for construction.

  14. Interesting one, Connie... Reminds me of what our critters say and think (deer, turkeys, raccoons, skunks, rabbits, etc) when they clear a lot and build a new home..... The wildlife just don't have very much space left for them around here. Kinda sad.... BUT--they say it's progress...??????

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  16. A very creative point of view, Connie. I'm hoping for the new family, the mouse will make its presence well known. (You have me rooting for the mouse, and I never did that before.)

    Be well.

  19. this is so adorable. I'm sure this must happen all over - i noticed in the town where we lived before we sold, there is so much new building going on. More than houses even it seems everyone wants a new 3 story condo or townhouse. They are going up all over.

  22. I am partial to tiny grey mice even when they tend to be in places I do not want them. Poor little mouse. But if it is like the little wild mice I am familiar with it will find a housing development to be quite nice for mice, with new sources of abundant food. Lovely poem.

  23. Thank you for your comments, everyone! I do feel sorry for mice and other animals that are displaced when people take over the land with new developments. On the other hand, I don't welcome them if they try to intrude into my home. I can't blame them when we are the ones who forced them to find a new place to live.
