Nightmare

Nightmare

I hate waking up from a drifting dream
where things aren't always as they seem.
Where the tick-tock from a clock
becomes an evil stranger's knock.
And someone I thought about during the day
is acting in a peculiar way.
He's invading my thoughts while I slumber.
How does he know me? How'd he get my number?
I'm late. I'm lost. I don't know anyone here.
I'm sound asleep and full of fear.
I'm in a hazy state of confusion.
Is this real, or is it illusion?
I'm in a maze. I'm falling, falling.
Wait! Stop! Stop! I hear someone calling.
"Wake up. Wake up. You're having a dream."
I try to focus. I can't move my feet.
I'm groggy. I realize I'm tangled in the sheet.
"You're OK, sweetie," you say. "I'm right here."
I wake up and see your familiar face so near.
I try to gather my wits about me.
What is real and what is fantasy?
I hate waking up from a drifting dream
where things aren't always as they seem.
How can there be so much chaos in my head,
when I am safe at home and snug in my bed?

  1. oh wow - wait, have you been inside my head. I know it's a dream when my mother is in current day situations. She's been gone for over twenty years, and yet she pops into a dream and I awake very confused. Excellent poem - you captured that drift perfectly.

Another great poem, Connie. I often dream that I am looking for something lost or either that I am running from something or someone!

  4. Oh this is so true! I hate to wake up after a bad dream and not be able to get it out of my mind. But it doesn't always have to be a dream; just thinking about some things makes my stomach knot up. ;(

  5. I rarely remember anything about my dreams, but when I do, it was usually awful!

  6. Boy, you really nailed how discombobulated some dreams can make us feel. Great job!

  7. well now...I've asked myself that very question just recently. For some reason I had to go to the bathroom and found myself sitting on top of the washer and then I woke up because I really had to go. But why the washing machine I wondered - what was that about?

Love your poem - I totally can relate.

  9. Not sure how those dreams become so vivid, Connie, but I too have had some real unusual ones. I;ve only screamed once and woken up to find my patient and caring husband next to me to reassure me, just as yours did. How lucky we both are :-)

  11. Oh dear Connie what a beautiful poem!!!

you almost dragged me into my nightmares which i used to see specially when i was going to be a mother and each night was full of terror and fright as it seemed that nightmares were waiting fro me

many times i saw same dream frequently that i was standing on the edge of deep well and just about to slip inside
my (late) mom used to say that expecting moms always have fears inside which result in bad dreams

  14. You captured that frightening dream state so accurately. It's fascinating and eerie how our brain talks with itself - Is this real? Am I dreaming?
    Very well done, Connie.
Take good care, and only sweet dreams to you.
